Many have asked lately, the following question: What is your recommendation for dealing with medical records contaminated with dried blood?
Under OSHA, you first want to determine whether there is a work practice shortcoming that is causing medical records to become contaminated with blood and then address it through training.
If it is an isolated incident that does not merit extra training, consider placing the contaminated document in a clear plastic folder, photocopy it, make a note on the photocopy that the original record was contaminated with blood, and then shred the original.
