Last Friday, it was announced that Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be stepping down in February. In her role as CMS administrator, she oversaw government health insurance programs that cover more than 100 million Americans ever year. In addition, she played an integral role in implementing the Affordable Care Act.
In a letter from Sylva Burwell, Health and Human Services Secretary announced "Principal Deputy Administrator, Andy Slavitt, has agreed to become the Acting Administrator." He joined CMS in June to help fix and oversee operations at HealthCare.gov.
While unexpected, this announcement gives us a clue as to what we may expect in 2015: a year of announcements and changes in the healthcare industry.
