Alert: employers may have noticed that the current version of the I-9 form used to verify a new employee's identity and employment authorization is set to expire on August 31, 2012.
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), recently solicited comments on ways to improve the employment eligibility process. In fact, a proposed new version of the I-9 was published in the Federal Register on March 27, 2012. (The comment period ended on May 29, 2012.)
Until such time as USCIS either replaces the new form or renews the old form, employers should continue to use the "old" version with August 31, 2012, expiration date.
